As the crisp autumn air begins to hint at the changing season, our minds naturally turn toward preparation- blankets out, barns secured, and forage secured for the long winter months ahead. For some horse owners, however, the changing season brings a difficult reality. Whether life circumstances have shifted, a beloved equine partner has been outgrown, or you are simply facing the hard decision of how to care for a horse as winter approaches, we want you to know: you are not alone, and this is a judgment-free zone.
Through the Safe Haven Horse Project, an official rescue and rehoming arm of NK Equine, we are currently stepping up our intake for horses needing to be surrendered before winter settles in. Finding a safe, loving home is our absolute priority.
Our Intake & Care Process: From Rescue to Revival
When a horse steps onto our property, their journey toward a bright future begins immediately.
Case-by-Case Evaluation: While we prioritize healthy transitions, we evaluate seniors, horses with special needs, or those working through temperament issues on a careful, case-by-case basis. We have successfully rehomed many horses like this, and we would love to hear about yours. While we cannot accept every horse due to space and financial limitations, please call us anyway- if we cannot take your horse, we will do everything we can to help you brainstorm alternatives or make calls on your behalf.
Zero Cost to You: We handle the logistics completely. We will pick them up, and we cover all veterinary and farrier expenses. If a horse is underweight, we safely and patiently bring them up to their ideal condition.
Natural Horsemanship & Individual Assessment: Once our trusted veterinarian and our team agree the horse is healthy, they enter our natural horsemanship training program. Through hours of observation and hands-on work, we assess their movement, mental capabilities, and unique quirks. A horse is only trained for the discipline they are best suited for, ensuring they stand the absolute best chance of being a successful, appreciated member of the horse community.
Rigorous Adoption Screening: When a horse is fully ready, we market to new prospects and screen every interested party through farm visits and reference checks. Every adopter must sign a strict contract stating that if they cannot keep the horse for any reason, the horse must be returned to an NK Equine location.
Transparent Adoption Fees: The Safe Haven Project is not a revenue-generating business. Adoption fees depend on the individual horse and our out-of-pocket expenses. Ironically, “nicer” horses often have a lower adoption fee because they didn’t require extensive rehabilitation. In cases where our financial investment exceeds market value, we absorb the overages ourselves. Donations are always welcome, but never required.
We do this simply because we love it. We love the job, we love the “glow-ups,” and we love the horses- all of them-for their unique contributions.
A Crucial Warning: Protect Your Horse from the Slaughter Pipeline
The Safe Haven Project exists for one vital reason: to prevent beloved pets and community horses from entering the devastating slaughter pipeline.
Too many well-meaning owners do not realize the harsh reality awaiting horses in unprotected online spaces. Kill buyers employ scouts- individuals who look unassuming, act like friendly shoppers, and promise a “forever home.” They know the right words to say.
Please protect your horse:
Avoid posting public ads when trying to rehome your horse.
Never post photos or details in comments on public social media threads.
Instead, spread the word privately through trusted horse people, or reach out to us directly.

Below you see a horse that the “before” picture was taken right before she came home to NK Equine and became a Foster failure. The second image, in the “after” photo, is only a month after being in our care. The below photo is six months later. Today, she looks even better with a muscled up top line and butt and her coat is shiny and healthy. She remains one of the most beautiful horses in our pasture. When she came that certainly was not the case as you can see. Her former owner took good care of her to the best of his abilities. But sometimes horses need more and it’s not always easy to figure out exactly what those needs are. That’s where safe haven comes in! We will get to the bottom of it and fix it!

Safe Haven Project Q&A
How long does a horse typically stay in the Safe Haven Project?
Naturally, this varies widely based on physical condition, training, and handling level. We never rush the process. Our quickest turnover was about three weeks; our longest is a foster failure turned permanent resident and a huge part of NK Equine. On average, a horse spends 4 to 6 months with us until they are ready for their forever home.
What is the average adoption fee?
Keeping in mind that we must price above kill-pen “by-the-pound” pricing to deter predatory buyers, our adoption fees generally range from $1,200 to $3,500. Even for horses with a much higher market value, we keep the adoption fee affordable for the sake of the horse.
Do adopters have to own their own property, or is boarding allowed?
Either is acceptable. Prior to approval, we conduct a barn visit where the horse will be kept, and we speak with the barn manager to ensure the quality of care meets our standards. Adopters sign a contract requiring them to notify us (and the barn manager to alert us) if the horse is ever moved, allowing us to perform occasional follow-up checks.
Is NK Equine a 501(c)(3) non-profit?
Although we are considering this for the future, we are not currently a 501(c)(3) organization. If you specifically require an IRS-recognized non-profit rescue, we can gladly refer you to one.
Does NK Equine make a profit on surrendered horses?
To date, our personal investment in surrendered horses has always exceeded the adoption fee. We have never personally profited from a surrender. In the future, should we end up with any surplus funds from an adoption, they will be strictly funneled back into an account dedicated exclusively to Safe Haven rescues.
Do you accept donations for the Safe Haven Project?
To date, we have not gotten any, but we sure would be grateful. We can accept cash, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle and Apple Pay. We can also accept donations of feed or hay or vet and farrier bills. All donations for the project will be kept in the project and not used elsewhere.
Can I get updates on my surrendered horse?
Absolutely! We love caring owners who choose a safe future over a quick, risky sale. We are more than happy to provide updates.
What if updates will make it too hard to say goodbye? Can I opt out?
Of course. We understand how emotional parting ways can be. Just let us know upon pickup that you would prefer not to receive updates, and we will honor that request.
What does the surrendering owner need to do?
Step 1: Contact us with your horse’s information (or fill out our intake form).
Step 2: Once your horse is accepted, schedule the pickup. You will sign an ownership transfer releasing you of all legal and financial responsibility moving forward. (We can email this document ahead of time upon request).
Step 3: Sleep well and walk tall knowing you did right by an animal in your care!
