TRAINER SPOTLIGHT: The Whisperer at NK Equine: Mastering the Art of Connection with Kara Deube

At the heart of every great training program is a philosophy that transcends basic maneuvers. At NK Equine Services, that philosophy is brought to life by our resident groundwork expert, Kara Deube. While her technical skills are immense, Kara possesses a rare, incomparable gift: an inherent ability to “talk” to horses that bridges the gap between fear and trust.

Left to right- Grimm, Kara, Beth – as you can see, where Kara goes, horses follow. Noelle, Kara’s fellow trainer, swears it’s because of her inherent ability to communicate with them- there is an easy gentleness in being understood and understanding.

More Than Just Groundwork

Groundwork is often misunderstood as merely a precursor to riding. In Kara’s hands, it is the foundation of a profound partnership. Her methodology isn’t about dominance; it is about communication. By reading the subtle language of ears, eyes, and muscle tension, Kara identifies the root of a horse’s anxiety and replaces it with calm, confident connection.

Whether she is refining performance behaviors or coaching a student, Kara’s approach remains consistent: listening to the horse above all else. Her expertise allows her to navigate complex behavioral issues with a level of patience and clarity that is rarely seen in the industry.

Charlie, Kara, Beth… (A thought from fellow trainer, Noelle)”If you knew Charlie, you‘d know that a bond with him does not come easy. Unless you’re Kara that is. There has never been another human he’s more drawn to. Charlie is the often ornery herd boss at NK Equine’s north location. He can be stubborn and mean. He is retired with ringbone and living his best life for his golden years out in the pasture and we’ve intentionally allowed his manners to be forgotten outside of safety type rules. So if he doesn’t feel like being pet, he’ll let you know. Except when Kara comes to the north location. She serves as a Charlie magnet. Kara really shines when she deals with horses that are labeled “wild” or “mean”. She brings out the best side of these animals with her ways that cannot be learned or taught. It is a gift she was born with. I am lucky enough to be able to witness her magic on a regular basis. If I didn’t see it happening with my own eyes, I would almost be in disbelief. Kara is the only other trainer in the world that I allow to do groundwork on my own personal horses.”

The Transformation of Beth: From Feral to Friend

The true measure of a trainer’s skill is found in the horses that others have deemed “too far gone.” Enter Beth.

Beth came to us through a heartbreaking situation. Purchased by a well-meaning owner who had been cruelly deceived by a dishonest horse dealer, Beth arrived at our facility essentially feral- a wild horse trapped in a domestic environment, terrified and reactive. Where others saw a dangerous project, Kara saw a soul in need of a guide.

The transformation was nothing short of magic. Through consistent, gentle, and intentional groundwork, Kara began the process of de-escalating Beth’s fight-or-flight response. By creating a safe, predictable environment and speaking a language Beth could finally understand, the walls came down.

Today, Beth is a completely different horse. The once-wild animal has been transformed into a calm, gentle partner, a horse you might describe as “sweet as a kitten.” She is a testament to the power of humane, intuitive training and a shining example of what happens when a horse is given the opportunity to trust again.
